Advanced Delaware Victim Assistance Academy

The Criminal Justice Council presents the next level of training for Victim Assistance providers in Delaware. The Advanced DVAA is being developed; applications for participants are not yet being accepted.

About

Since 2019, the CJC has provided annual Foundational Victim Assistance Academies to early-career victim service providers and allied professionals. To expand on this effort, the CJC is proud to be developing a customized, continuing training and education program for mid-career victim assistance providers that is specific to Delaware.

The Advanced DVAA is in the process of being planned, led by volunteers in the Advanced DVAA Planning Group, which includes Foundational Faculty, Foundational Alumni, and experienced providers and leaders within the field. In order to begin mapping out the curriculum, the Advanced DVAA Planning Group is seeking volunteer trainers and curriculum writers to collaborate and make this vision a reality.

Advanced DVAA Faculty – Calling all Interested Volunteer Trainers!

The Advanced DVAA Working Group is seeking volunteer trainers to make up the Advanced Faculty. The application process is a two-phase process: Phase I is the submission of an application in Survey Monkey, which includes personal statement, a resume, and a training sample. Phase II includes a brief panel interview to assess fit and training demonstration. Selected Advanced DVAA Faculty are expected to participate on a voluntary basis, with the promise of technical assistance, professional development, and support to attend the Advanced DVAA. Areas of expertise include Communication Skills in Leadership & Management, Ethics, Trauma-Informed Management, OVC Model Standards, and many more. The complete list is available in the Survey Monkey application.

The application period for new faculty for BOTH the Foundational and the Advanced DVAA opens December 2025. The application includes several questions on experience in Victim Services and training/facilitation. A resume and a sample of a recent training will be required.

Be advised that in-process applications are not able to be saved at this time, but the questions are available ahead of the open application period. Applicants must select whether they wish to apply for the Foundational Faculty or Advanced Faculty pools, or they may apply to be considered for both Academy Faculties.

All applications must be received online by Friday, January 31, 2025. No hard copies will be accepted. In order to be eligible for selection, candidates must complete all portions of the application.

Faculty Selection & Next Steps

All applications to join the DVAA Faculty pool will be scored and ranked competitively by a review team. Finalists are invited to participate in an in-person interview conducted by a panel in early 2025 before acceptance decisions are made. A portion of the interview will require a brief training demonstration. Applicants will be notified of their selection status in early March 2025.

Once Faculty are selected, Faculty will be on-boarded, and the Advanced Curriculum will be developed in coordination with the Planning Group. Each module will be beta-tested before the Planning Group schedules the first Advanced DVAA, which is estimated to take place in late 2026 or sometime in 2027.

Envisioning the Advanced DVAA

The Advanced DVAA is being designed to specifically meet the needs of managers, supervisors, and emerging leaders in the field. Content delivery is tentatively planned to take place in-person over 4 days, likely spread over two to four weeks. Classes will be small (16-24 people) to optimize knowledge and resource sharing.

The Faculty of the Delaware Victim Assistance Academies are primarily responsible for the design and facilitation style that is unique from many other trainings. Advanced Faculty are expected to work with Foundational Faculty to design a curriculum for adult learners, craft slide decks that are visually engaging, and develop supplemental resources, custom worksheets, and handouts to emphasize main points and take-aways for learners. Along with professional development, faculty will be introduced to a larger pool of professionals through the DVAA Alumni Network.

Mission of the Advanced DVAA

The mission of the Advanced Delaware Victim Assistance Academy (DVAA) is to offer standardized training that integrates interdisciplinary, evidence-based knowledge and practice to victim service professionals and allies by providing a space for learning, networking, and applying new skills. Through training and networking opportunities, the Advanced DVAA strives to develop a community of practice where Delaware’s mid-career victim service professionals can become more culturally sensitive and inclusive, victim/survivor-centered, and trauma-informed in their work.

Advanced DVAA Goals

  1. Provide intermediate and advanced skills and tools necessary to sustain a career working with victims and survivors of crime.
  2. Build on existing trauma-informed organizational strategies that can be developed and implemented by those in leadership and management roles.
  3. Provide an opportunity for Advanced advocates and emerging leaders to network and gain professional contacts within the field.
  4. Broaden and strengthen the professionalism and promote sustainability of victim services in the State of Delaware.

Who is the Advanced DVAA for?

The Advanced DVAA is intended for intermediate and advanced members of the Delaware Victim Service field allied professionals. The curriculum is designed with agency leadership and decision-makers across the state in mind. Lastly, the Advanced DVAA seeks to provide opportunities to learn from one another and build upon attendees’ existing trauma-informed practices. Participants can expect to be familiar with some of the topics and share their knowledge and experience on those that are strengths in their professional tool set.

Attendees do not be Foundational DVAA Graduates. We encourage all interested, eligible individuals to apply. This includes full-time managers, supervisors, leaders, or emerging leaders from a variety of community-based and system-based programs and other allied professionals, such as law enforcement, probation and parole, and corrections.

Timeline and Progress

2017 – The Advanced DVAA was first envisioned in 2017, when planning began in earnest to create the Foundational DVAA.

2019 – First Foundational DVAA is held in March 2019. After the first Foundational DVAA concluded, the Academy Faculty and CJC support staff worked to revise the curriculum into what it is today.

2020 – Second DVAA postponed due to COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 – In Spring, 2021, a small team attended the Texas Advanced Academy to begin visioning an Advanced Academy in Delaware. The Texas Advanced Academy is well-established and respected in the landscape of Foundational and Advanced State Victim Assistance Academies. The team attending the Texas Advanced Academy debriefed and met regularly; they created a blueprint of what an Advanced DVAA might look like. The second Foundational DVAA was held in September 2021.

2022 – Third Foundational DVAA held in September 2022.

2024 – The fourth Foundational DVAA is held in March 2024. In Spring 2024, an Advanced DVAA Working Group is created, leadership is elected in Summer of 2024, and a call for new faculty is prepared for Fall 2024.
