What is Weed & Seed?

Weed & Seed is a federally funded program that encourages communities to come together in order to weed out drugs and violent crime and seed in economic revitalization and social programs. The program was initiated by the U.S. Department of Justice/ Office of Justice Programs, through its discretionary grant program resources and involves a comprehensive revitalization strategy based on four main components which consist of: Law Enforcement, Community Policing, Prevention-Intervention-Treatment and Neighborhood Restoration. Once the violent felons and drug traffickers have been removed, community revitalization is accomplished by implementing and focusing a broad array of new and previously existing social, economic and recreational programs in the targeted neighborhoods. The revitalization efforts involve substantial cooperation between Federal, State and local agencies, along with local business and community organizations. As a result, the success of Weed & Seed is dependent upon the active participation of the community. Weed & Seed seeks to engage residents and community representatives, human service agencies, and area businesses in all aspects of the strategy.

The Prices Run Neighborhood received Official Recognition as a Weed and Seed Site on July 1, 2005.
